چکیده

Network monitoring is essential to the correct and efficient operation of overlay networks, and active measurement is a key design problem in network monitoring. Unfortunately, almost all active probing algorithms ignore the measurement conflict problem: Active measurements conflict with each other due to the nature of these measurements, the associated overhead, and the network topology which results in reporting incorrect results. In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling periodic QoS measurement tasks in overlay networks. We first show that this problem is NP-complete, and then propose a conflict-aware scheduling algorithm whose goal is to maximize the number of measurement tasks that can run concurrently, based on a well known approximation algorithm. Simulation results show that our algorithm achieves 25% better schedulability over the existing algorithm. Finally, we discuss various practical considerations, and identify several interesting research problems in this context.

A Low-Cost, Distributed and Conflict-Aware Measurement Method for Overlay Network Services Utilizing Local Information Exchange

Measuring network resource information, including available bandwidth, propagation delay, and packet loss ratio, is an important task for efficient operation of overlay network services. Although measurement accuracy can be enhanced by frequent measurements, performing measurements with high frequency can cause measurement conflict problem that increases the network load and degrades measuremen...

A Distributed Mechanism for Probing Overlay Path Bandwidth Using Local Information Exchange

Available bandwidth, along with latency and packet loss rate, is an essential metric for the efficient operation of overlay network applications. However, the measurement of available bandwidth creates a larger traffic overhead than other metrics. Measurement conflicts on routeoverlapping paths can also seriously degrade measurement accuracy and cause a non-negligible increase in the network lo...

Transient Measurement Site Design in pipe networks using the Decision Table Method (DTM)

The accuracy of leak detection and calibration of pipe networks by means of the inverse transient analysis (ITA) is highly affected by the number and location of the measurement sites. This study introduces a conceptual decision-making model, the Decision Table Method (DTM), for the measurement site design of pipe networks with the aim of inverse transient analysis. Through the Decision Table M...

Bridging the Gap Between PAMs and Overlay Networks: A Framework-Oriented Approach

Besides the classic measurement methodologies such as ping for measuring RTT and traceroute for discovering IP topology, there also exists a new trend in measurement methodology, cooperative measurement [1,2]. In cooperative measurement, a measurement node sometimes communicates with other measurement nodes, shares collected data, and estimates the network characteristics of some parts of netwo...
